Ce qui avait commenc\u00e9 par une qu\u00eate pour trouver un pantalon \u00e0 son mari Donald Fisher en 1969, l&rsquo;ann\u00e9e hippie, \u00e0 San Francisco, s&rsquo;est transform\u00e9 en un empire qui a habill\u00e9 et fa\u00e7onn\u00e9 des g\u00e9n\u00e9rations d&rsquo;Am\u00e9ricains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Protestation contre les WASP<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00ab The Gap \u00bb n\u2019\u00e9tait ni la premi\u00e8re ni la derni\u00e8re marque \u00e0 trouver un terrain fertile \u00e0 San Francisco dans les ann\u00e9es 1960, une ville qui, \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque, surfait sur la vague du flower power. La jeunesse de l\u2019\u00e9poque s\u2019opposait \u00e0 bien des choses, mais surtout aux normes et valeurs dominantes et aux Am\u00e9ricains conservateurs et riches, les soi-disant WASP ou \u00ab<em>White Anglo-Saxon Protestants<\/em>\u00bb.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le foss\u00e9 g\u00e9n\u00e9rationnel entre les jeunes rebelles et les WASP conservateurs a inspir\u00e9 Donald Fisher, un promoteur immobilier local, et son \u00e9pouse Doris \u00e0 faire du jean, mati\u00e8re de base des v\u00eatements de la classe ouvri\u00e8re, l\u2019uniforme de la jeunesse rebelle. Donald Fisher eut cette id\u00e9e de g\u00e9nie alors qu\u2019il cherchait en vain, dans un grand magasin, un jean Levi\u2019s qui lui aille parfaitement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le foss\u00e9 qu\u2019il avait remarqu\u00e9 auparavant entre les g\u00e9n\u00e9rations en conflit, le couple l\u2019a \u00e9galement constat\u00e9 entre l\u2019offre des grands magasins et les v\u00eatements que les jeunes de l\u2019\u00e9poque recherchaient. Selon eux, c\u2019est dans ce foss\u00e9 que se trouvait le cr\u00e9neau \u00e0 exploiter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00ab The Gap \u00bb ou le foss\u00e9<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Le tout premier magasin fut ainsi baptis\u00e9 \u00ab the Gap \u00bb (abr\u00e9g\u00e9 en \u00ab Gap \u00bb en 1986) et devint un magasin o\u00f9 l\u2019on trouvait dans les rayons la collection Levi\u2019s au complet, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire vraiment tous les mod\u00e8les dans toutes les tailles et couleurs possibles. Chaque client qui franchissait le seuil de \u00ab the Gap \u00bb trouvait exactement le jean qui lui allait comme un gant.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Donald et Doris Fisher ont saisi cette occasion pour lancer un concept plus qu&rsquo;innovant. En effet, ils ne vendaient pas seulement la collection compl\u00e8te de jeans de Levi Strauss &amp; Co, mais aussi des disques vinyles et des cassettes audio. Tout cela s&rsquo;inscrivait bien s\u00fbr dans la strat\u00e9gie visant \u00e0 toucher un public jeune, auquel ils voulaient offrir exactement ce qu&rsquo;il recherchait : non seulement de la musique, mais aussi une large gamme de v\u00eatements en jean tendance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">De la monomarque \u00e0 la multimarque&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>La strat\u00e9gie initiale consistant \u00e0 s&rsquo;associer \u00e0 une seule marque avait plut\u00f4t bien r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 \u00ab The Gap \u00bb, surtout dans les premi\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, mais il est devenu de plus en plus \u00e9vident qu&rsquo;il fallait mettre un terme \u00e0 la d\u00e9pendance vis-\u00e0-vis de Levi Strauss &amp; Co.&nbsp;\u00c0 partir de 1973, non seulement d\u2019autres marques ont \u00e9t\u00e9 distribu\u00e9es dans les magasins, mais la toute premi\u00e8re collection \u00ab The Gap \u00bb a \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 lanc\u00e9e. Ce fut le premier pas vers une plus grande ind\u00e9pendance et un succ\u00e8s encore plus grand.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019entreprise a poursuivi sa conqu\u00eate des \u00c9tats-Unis et, \u00e0 la fin des ann\u00e9es 70, The Gap Incorporated a \u00e9t\u00e9 cot\u00e9e \u00e0 la Bourse de Wall Street. L\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat des investisseurs \u00e9tait grand et, apr\u00e8s une p\u00e9riode tumultueuse marqu\u00e9e par la crise p\u00e9troli\u00e8re et la r\u00e9cession du d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 80, le chiffre d\u2019affaires a d\u00e9pass\u00e9 pour la premi\u00e8re fois les 300 millions de dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">La phase de maturit\u00e9<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Entre-temps, la jeunesse de la fin des ann\u00e9es 60 avait toutefois atteint l&rsquo;\u00e2ge adulte et disposait de moyens financiers plus importants. C&rsquo;\u00e9tait donc le moment id\u00e9al pour lancer une marque branch\u00e9e qui pouvait sans crainte afficher des prix un peu plus \u00e9lev\u00e9s. \u00c9tant donn\u00e9 que l&rsquo;accent \u00e9tait d\u00e9sormais mis sur un public cible plus large et plus vari\u00e9, il \u00e9tait tout \u00e0 fait logique que l&rsquo;image de marque, les magasins et la strat\u00e9gie marketing soient enti\u00e8rement repens\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le PDG Millard Drexler a su forger une identit\u00e9 propre : non seulement l&rsquo;\u00e9quipe de cr\u00e9ateurs devait s\u00e9duire un public plus mature, mais le d\u00e9partement marketing \u00e9tait \u00e9galement mobilis\u00e9 \u00e0 fond. Il savait \u00e9galement que des acquisitions pouvaient contribuer \u00e0 accro\u00eetre la part de march\u00e9 \u00e0 court terme. C&rsquo;est dans cette optique qu&rsquo;il a proc\u00e9d\u00e9 \u00e0 l&rsquo;acquisition de Banana Republic en 1983. Aujourd&rsquo;hui, Gap Incorporated compte m\u00eame six marques dans son portefeuille : Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic, Athleta, Piperlime et Intermix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">L&rsquo;Europe : une aventure de courte dur\u00e9e<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Le succ\u00e8s rencontr\u00e9 sur le march\u00e9 national a incit\u00e9 Millard Drexler \u00e0 se tourner vers l&rsquo;international. \u00c0 l&rsquo;instar de nombreuses entreprises am\u00e9ricaines, The Gap Incorporated a ouvert en 1987 son tout premier magasin \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9tranger (sous le nouveau nom abr\u00e9g\u00e9 \u00ab Gap \u00bb) \u00e0 Londres, suivi rapidement par le Canada et la France. La m\u00eame ann\u00e9e, l&rsquo;entreprise a r\u00e9alis\u00e9 pour la premi\u00e8re fois un chiffre d&rsquo;affaires sup\u00e9rieur au milliard de dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aujourd\u2019hui, ce classique de la mode am\u00e9ricaine doit toutefois faire face \u00e0 la concurrence venue de l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur des \u00c9tats-Unis, d\u2019abord celle des g\u00e9ants de la fast-fashion tels que Zara et H&amp;M, mais aussi, de plus en plus, celle des acteurs de l\u2019ultra-fast-fashion Temu et Shein. En 2020, en pleine pand\u00e9mie de coronavirus, le d\u00e9taillant de v\u00eatements a d\u00e9finitivement ferm\u00e9 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.retaildetail.be\/fr\/news\/mode\/gap-gives-europe\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.retaildetail.be\/fr\/news\/mode\/gap-gives-europe\/\">tous ses magasins en Europe<\/a> afin de pouvoir se concentrer sur son march\u00e9 domestique.
