De technologische ontwikkelingen hebben het mogelijk gemaakt om klantendata op te slaan dankzij een getrouwheidskaart, precies te meten waar websurfers op klikken en de consument te lokaliseren op elk moment van de dag. Het zijn mogelijkheden die de retail gretig voor zijn kar heeft gespannen.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Door al die informatie wordt hun manier van handelen echter grondig uitgedaagd. Zoals professor <b>David Nicholas<\/b> van University College London op 26 april op het \u2018<b>RetailDetail Congres \u2013 Retailing 2020<\/b>\u2019 zal vertellen, heeft de hedendaagse technologie de digitale consument en de Google-generatie geschapen.<\/p>\n<h2>Consument op de dool<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cUit een studie in het Verenigd Koninkrijk blijkt dat mensen vandaag de overgrote meerderheid van de tijd &#8211; die ze niet besteden aan eten, slapen en reizen &#8211; doorbrengen met hun <b>computer, mobiele telefoon of televisie<\/b>\u201d, vertelt professor Nicholas in een recente bijdrage in het vakblad Learned Publishing.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Aangezien de digitale wereld zo\u2019n groot deel van het dagelijks leven van de consument uitmaakt, kunnen de retailers er duidelijk niet meer omheen. De tijd die ze online doorbrengen is er echter \u00e9\u00e9n van<b> vluchtigheid en promiscu\u00efteit<\/b>. \u201cBij de meeste websitebezoeken worden slechts 1 tot 3 pagina\u2019s bekeken en minstens de helft van de bezoekers keert nooit terug\u201d, aldus de universiteitsprofessor. Meestal blijft men online niet langer dan enkele minuten op \u00e9\u00e9n plek, iets wat in de fysieke wereld al simpelweg niet denkbaar is.<\/p>\n<h2>Retail stijgt naar een nieuw niveau<\/h2>\n<p>Toch verschuift dat gedrag ook naar de offline wereld. We doen geen \u00e9\u00e9n of twee zaken meer op hetzelfde moment, maar minstens <b>vijf dingen tegelijkertijd<\/b>. De Google-generatie wordt dan ook de generatie van het multitasken genoemd. Wees dus niet verwonderd als klanten op de winkelvloer aan het bellen zijn, kleren passen \u00e9n hun Facebookstatus updaten \u2013 inclusief foto van hun aanwinst. \u201cWe lijken niet ons niet meer met \u00e9\u00e9n iets voor een langere tijd te kunnen bezighouden. We doen altijd veel liever veel verschillende dingen, omdat dat interessanter is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Het komt er dus voor retailers \u2013 en eigenlijk voor iedereen die aan de consument iets te bieden heeft \u2013 op aan om de manier waarop ze zichzelf presenteren, laten beleven en verpakken te <b>herzien<\/b>. \u201cKlokken kun je niet terugdraaien. Smartphones zullen het [digitale consumeren] zelfs naar een nog heel ander niveau tillen.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Brainstormen met Belgium\u2019s finest<\/h2>\n<p>Niet alleen fysieke retailers moet zich overigens aanpassen, ook de online wereld heeft volgens David Nicholas <b>inschattingsfouten<\/b> gemaakt: \u201cWebdesigners hebben verkeerdelijk aangenomen dat de gebruikers hun (vroegere) offline gedrag \u2013 dat grotendeels is gevormd door schaarste en een beperkt aanbod \u2013 zouden meenemen naar het internet. Het internet werkt nochtans helemaal anders: door de ongeziene en massale keuze die de consument er heeft, is zijn gedrag drastisch veranderd.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hoe daarop best in te spelen? Daarover wordt op 26 april diepgaand over gebrainstormd onder leiding van Vlerickprofessor <b>Gino Van Ossel<\/b> en met ervaren rotten <b>Erwin Van Osta<\/b> (CEO van Hubo) en <b>Frank De Moor<\/b> (CEO van Macintosh Retail Group).
