Daarom engageert de sector zich voor 100% duurzame chocolade tegen 2030.<\/p>\n<p><!--break--><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Hoge urgentie<\/h2>\n<p>Belgi\u00eb produceert jaarlijks zo&#8217;n 700.000 ton chocolade en pralines, is de tweede grootste exporteur ter wereld en mag prat gaan op de grootse chocoladefabriek ter wereld. De toekomst van de sector is echter wankel, gezien de precaire situatie waarin de cacaoproducenten zich bevinden: extreme armoede, kinderarbeid en ontbossing bedreigen de cacaoteelt. De urgentie is bijzonder hoog in Ivoorkust en Ghana, twee landen die samen meer dan 60% van de alle cacao produceren.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Het Belgische programma \u2018Beyond Chocolate\u2019, ge\u00efnitieerd door Minister van Ontwikkelingssamenwerking Alexander De Croo, wil met duidelijke engagementen de hele sector richting duurzaamheid stuwen. Uiterlijk in 2030 moet de ontbossing als gevolg van cacaoproductie voor de Belgische chocoladesector stoppen en moeten alle cacaoproducenten een leefbaar inkomen verdienen. De sector gaat jaarlijks 35 miljoen euro investeren om de Belgische chocoladeproductie te verduurzamen.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Concrete initiatieven<\/h2>\n<p>Naast sectorfederatie Choprabisco engageren ook retailketens <strong>Aldi<\/strong>, <strong>Carrefour<\/strong>, <strong>Colruyt Group<\/strong>, <strong>Delhaize<\/strong> en <strong>Lidl<\/strong> zich voor hun huismerken. Verschillende actoren kondigen eigen engagementen aan: het Fairtrade-label verhoogt vanaf volgend jaar zijn minimumprijs voor cacao en garandeert daarbovenop ook een hogere premie voor cacao. \u201cInkomen en duurzaamheid zijn nauw met elkaar verbonden\u201d, zegt Nicolas Lambert, directeur van Fairtrade Belgium. \u201cMilieubehoud en ecologische landbouwpraktijken vormen uiteraard een belangrijk onderdeel van de Fairtrade standaarden. Maar men kan van cacaoboeren niet verwachten dat ze hun manier van werken aanpassen als ze niet genoeg verdienen om fatsoenlijk te leven.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Colruyt Group gaat in West-Afrika een duurzame cacaoketen opzetten, om de lokale boeren een leefbaar inkomen te verschaffen. \u201cWe gaan een pilootproject starten met een of meerdere cacaoco\u00f6peratieven in landen waar de boeren het meest moeite hebben om te leven van hun teelt, wellicht in het West-Afrikaanse Ghana of Ivoorkust\u201d, zegt Stefan Goethaert, die bij de retailer verantwoordelijk is voor productverduurzaming. Bij Colruyt dragen vandaag al 98,6% van alle chocolade- en cacaoproducten van Boni Selection en Everyday een of meerdere duurzaamheidslabels, waaronder Bio, Fairtrade of UTZ.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Marktleider <strong>Mondelez<\/strong>, bekend van merken als C\u00f4te d\u2019Or en Milka, noemt het Beyond Chocolate-programma een logische volgende stap voor de chocoladesector. Met zijn eigen duurzaamheidsinitiatief Cocoa helpt de producent bouwen aan een beter leven voor ondertussen meer dan 120.500 boeren in 1.085 cacaotelende gemeenschappen. Tegen 2022 wil het programma 200.000 boeren &#8216;empoweren&#8217; en 1 miljoen mensen binnen de cacaogemeenschappen bereiken.
