Een nieuw rapport schetst de onzekere toekomst van de sector, die gedomineerd wordt door twintig \u2018superwinnaars\u2019, aangevoerd door Inditex, LVMH en Nike.<\/p>\n<p><!--break--><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Luxesector is optimistisch<\/h2>\n<p>Polarisering kenmerkt de modemarkt: wel 97% van de economische winst in de sector wordt gegenereerd door amper twintig modebedrijven, waarvan de meeste zich in het hogere segment bevinden. Opmerkelijk is ook dat die top-20 over de jaren redelijk stabiel is gebleven: vaste waarden als Inditex, LVMH en Nike wisten <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/retail\/our-insights\/the-state-of-fashion-2019-a-year-of-awakening?cid=other-eml-nsl-mip-mck-oth-1812&amp;hlkid=57e5b4e863e74cc3b44fa176cf1c21b4&amp;hctky=10109013&amp;hdpid=81d586c0-125c-489e-903e-c96e7434a5ce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hun economische winst over de afgelopen tien jaar zelfs te verdubbelen<\/a>. Dat blijkt uit het nieuwe rapport \u2018The State of Fashion\u2019 dat werd opgesteld door McKinsey in samenwerking met The Business of Fashion. Geen half werk hier: het onderzoek nam de cijfers van meer dan 500 bedrijven onder de loep en ondervroeg 275 topmensen uit de industrie wereldwijd.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Voor modespelers wordt 2019 een jaar van ontwaken, zegt het rapport: groei is niet langer vanzelfsprekend. In zowat alle segmenten verwacht het lagere groeicijfers dan in 2018, enkel voor het luxesegment is er optimisme. Dreigende handelsoorlogen en de brexit leiden tot onzekerheid over de wereldeconomie, maar ook de onvoorspelbaarheid van consumentengedrag noopt modebedrijven tot voorzichtigheid. Daardoor focussen ze sterker op kostencontrole en productiviteit. Toch zien ze zich ook verplicht om te investeren in digitalisering, automatisering, data-analyse, platforms en personalisering.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Huren in plaats van kopen<\/h2>\n<p>Het zakenmodel van moderetailers moet op de schop. Spotify en Netflix maken school: jongere consumenten kopen vaker tweedehands of gaan ook kledij huren in plaats van ze te kopen, denk aan Rent the Runway of The RealReal. Dat is immers goedkoper en duurzamer. Sociale en milieuvraagstukken komen sterker op de voorgrond: een eis van wakkere millennials en Gen Z-consumenten, die merken belonen als ze sterke standpunten durven innemen (zoals Nike of Levi Strauss recent deden). Wantrouwige consumenten eisen openheid van modemerken: over productieomstandigheden en milieu-impact, over prijszetting, over creatieve integriteit\u2026 Tegelijk verwachten ze dat hun eigen data veilig zijn (denk aan recente datalekken bij e-tailers).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In de mobiele klantreis wordt de kloof tussen ontdekken en kopen een pijnpunt: consumenten willen een stuk dat ze (online) ontdekken binnen de 24 uur in huis hebben. Modemerken zullen moeten investeren in artifici\u00eble intelligentie, online stijladvies, &#8216;social shopping&#8217;, &#8216;visual search&#8217;\u2026 Wie ontwikkelt de Shazam van de mode?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Produceren op bestelling<\/h2>\n<p>E-commerceplatformen groeien snel en breiden hun ecosysteem uit met betaaldiensten, clouddiensten, marketingoplossingen, logistiek\u2026 Retailmarges volstaan immers niet om winstgevend te worden. Traditionele merken moeten dan ook hun eigen zakenmodel durven omgooien om relevant te blijven en snel groeiende uitdagers weerwerk te bieden. Kleinere exclusieve collecties, sterkere aanwezigheid op sociale media en investeringen in incubatoren voor start-ups zijn enkele pistes. Automatisering en data-analyse maken het mogelijk om flexibele productiecycli op bestelling te maken. Zo kunnen merken sneller reageren op trends en consumentenverwachtingen.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Conclusie? De snelheid van verandering zal ook in de modesector niet afnemen, integendeel. Het lot van individuele spelers is hoogst onzeker. Nieuwe markten, nieuwe technologie\u00ebn en veranderende consumentenbehoeften bieden kansen, maar houden ook risico&#8217;s in. Het rapport voorspelt dat 2019 getekend zal worden door grote verschuivingen in consumentengedrag, gekoppeld aan technologie, sociale issues en vertrouwenskwesties. Daarnaast wordt de markt mogelijk verstoord door geopolitieke en macro-economische gebeurtenissen.
