Daarmee is de honger van oprichter Hiroshi Mikitani allerminst gestild: hij wil ook Europa en Amerika veroveren en een echte wereldspeler worden.<\/p>\n<p><!--break--><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Groei en diversificatie<\/h2>\n<p>De groei van Rakuten is opmerkelijk: 22 jaar na de oprichting is het bedrijf een echt imperium met een beurswaarde van 8,5 miljard euro en meer dan 14.000 werknemers wereldwijd. Aanvankelijk verkocht het bedrijf via een webplatform allerlei producten van retailers, maar door gerichte overnames in binnen- en buitenland wist Rakuten zijn activiteiten steeds verder uit te breiden. Ondertussen is e-commerce slechts een van de zeventig diensten die het bedrijf levert: het heeft nu ook een eigen bank, een mobiele bataalapp en een streamingdienst.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Veelzeggend is het <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.nl\/achtergrond\/1288543\/japans-rakuten-wil-per-se-slagen-in-europa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sponsorcontract met voetbalclub FC Barcelona<\/a>: sinds dit jaar prijkt de naam van het bedrijf op de shirts van een van de populairste clubs ter wereld. Met de deal is een bedrag gemoeid van 200 miljoen euro over een periode van vier jaar: het geeft aan dat het Mikitani menens is om van Rakuten een wereldmerk te maken. Dat beaamt ook Michiaki Tanaka, hoogleraar Business Administration aan de Rikkyo-universiteit in Tokio: \u201cHij wil per se slagen in de ontwikkelde markten, hoewel sommigen zeggen dat Rakuten zich beter kan richten op opkomende economie\u00ebn\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Om ook internationaal te kunnen groeien, werd in 2010 alvast Engels de voertaal in het bedrijf. Volgens Arjen van de Vall, president van Rakuten Europa, was dat een cruciale stap: \u201cHet heeft ons bedrijf veel opener en transparanter gemaakt. Het is hierdoor mogelijk de beste talenten en slimste mensen aan te nemen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Japan heeft Rakuten ondertussen ook een telecomlicentie te pakken en is inmiddels de vierde provider op de Japanse telefoniemarkt. De verwachting is dat de prijzen hierdoor sterk zullen dalen. \u201cWe willen innovatie brengen in de telecomsector.
