Dat staat in een gelekte memo die terecht is gekomen bij de Wall Street Journal. De memo komt van de topman van Groupon, Andrew Mason, en onthult goeie financi\u00eble resultaten. Mason stelt de ambitie te hebben om &#8220;de omzet over het miljard (dollar; 726 miljoen euro) te tillen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>\u201cNiemand heeft al gedaan wat wij nu doen.\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Groupon haalde vorig jaar een omzet van 760 miljoen dollar (552 miljoen euro) waarvan zowat tweederde in de VS. Het bedrijf heeft 4150 werknemers in 35 landen en telt 51 miljoen gebruikers.<\/p>\n<p>\nDe memo geeft ook een kijk op de unieke stijl van Mason. Zo schrijft hij: &#8220;De aarde is heel erg oud &#8211; duizenden jaren oud zelfs, volgens sommigen &#8211; en niemand heeft al gedaan wat wij nu doen. Jullie trots op wat jullie bereikt hebben zou zo groot moeten zijn dat die iedereen irriteert. Jullie zouden zo breed moeten glimlachen dat iedereen op jullie gezicht wilt slaan. Jullie zouden blijer moeten zijn dan wie ook ter wereld.&#8221; <\/p>\n<h2>Frodo beklimt Mount Doom<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-top: 10px;margin-bottom: 10px;margin-left: 10px\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" align=\"right\" width=\"200\" height=\"133\" src=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/spacer.png\" \/>Daarna waarschuwt hij echter dat zijn personeel niet op zijn lauweren mag rusten, aangezien copycats en reuzen als Google alles in het werk zullen stellen om aan de marktpositie van Groupon te knabbelen. Hij vergelijkt alle tegenstand met &#8220;Frodo die Mount Doom beklimt&#8221; en waarschuwt voor de voorbeelden van &#8220;Yahoo, MySpace en AOL, van wie de snelheid van de opkomst enkel werd overtroffen door de snelheid van hun neergang&#8221;. Deze bedrijven verloren volgens hem immers niet tegen de concurrentie, maar tegen zichzelf door &#8220;niet meer te innoveren en zo niet meer tegemoet te komen aan de wensen van de klanten&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p>\nHij voorspelt ten slotte dat &#8220;2011 zal beslissen of Groupon \u00e9\u00e9n van de grote merken wordt die onze generatie definieert, of dat het slechts een interessant idee was van mensen die daarna aan de kant werden geschoven door anderen die slimmer waren en harder werkten.&#8221; Zijn gouden raad voor de toekomst is dan ook: &#8220;maak de mensen blij, wees nooit tevreden en wees vooral nooit saai&#8221;.
