Ontbossing een halt toeroepen<\/h2>\n

De nieuwe importregels vormen de meest in het oog springende maatregel van een heel pakket initiatieven die Europa wil nemen voor de bescherming van het milieu, het klimaat en de biodiversiteit.<\/p>\n

Na China is de Europese Unie de grootste afnemer van soja, rundvlees, palmolie, hout, cacao en koffie. Voor de verbouwing van al die producten moeten niet zelden bossen wijken. Ondanks vrijwillige akkoorden en de invoering van allerlei keurmerken verdween er de voorbije 30 jaar netto 178 miljoen hectare woud, berekende de VN-voedsel- en landbouworganisatie FAO<\/strong>. Dat komt zowat overeen met de totale oppervlakte van Frankrijk.<\/p>\n

Traceerbaar<\/h2>\n

De nieuwe regelgeving stelt dat invoerders van bovengenoemde producten, maar ook van afgeleide producten zoals leder, chocolade en meubelen, zullen moeten aantonen dat die ontbossingsvrij zijn, en dus afkomstig van bestaande landbouwgronden. De grondstoffen zullen met andere woorden traceerbaar moeten zijn, zodat duidelijk is uit welke regio ze afkomstig zijn. Het is aan de bedrijven om hun toeleveringsketen te onderwerpen aan een zorgvuldigheidsonderzoek (\u2018due diligence’), terwijl de lidstaten zullen instaan voor de controle.<\/p>\n

Volgens het WWF<\/strong> is ook een land als Belgi\u00eb in niet geringe mate verantwoordelijk voor de wereldwijde ontbossing. \u201cDe oppervlakte die nodig is voor de productie van soja, cacao, rundvlees en leer, palmolie, koffie, rubber, hout en papier die Belgi\u00eb in ruwe of bewerkte vorm invoert, beloopt meer dan 10 miljoen hectare per jaar. Dat is meer dan drie keer de oppervlakte van ons land<\/a>\u201d, aldus de milieuorganisatie in De Tijd.<\/p>\n
