{"id":53932,"date":"2022-02-03T14:36:04","date_gmt":"2022-02-03T14:36:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.retaildetail.be\/food\/amazon-strengthens-supermarket-strategy\/"},"modified":"2022-02-03T14:36:04","modified_gmt":"2022-02-03T14:36:04","slug":"amazon-strengthens-supermarket-strategy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.retaildetail.be\/nl\/news\/food\/amazon-strengthens-supermarket-strategy\/","title":{"rendered":"Amazon scherpt supermarktstrategie aan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>De supermarkten van <strong>Amazon<\/strong> doen het steeds beter: in de Verenigde Staten ontwikkelen <strong>Whole Foods<\/strong> en <strong>Amazon Fresh<\/strong> zich als complementaire formules, en die strategie begint vruchten af te werpen.<\/p>\n<p><!--break--><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Bezoekers nemen toe<\/h2>\n<p>Even leek het erop dat de traditionele supermarkten van Amazon niet zouden aanslaan: volgers zagen slechts weinig bezoekers in de Amerikaanse vestigingen van Amazon Fresh, de nieuwe formule die Amazon sinds\u00a02020 uitrolt, en Whole Foods kon als een van de enige supermarktketens niet profiteren van de coronaboost. Kraakt Jeff Bezos <a href=\"https:\/\/www.retaildetail.be\/nl\/news\/food\/heeft-amazon-de-toekomst-van-supermarkten-nu-echt-gekraakt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dan toch niet de code<\/a> van foodretail?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nu lijkt het echter wel de goeie richting uit te gaan: in de oudste acht Amazon Fresh-winkels (van de momenteel 23 in de VS) steeg het aantal bezoekers in de loop van 2021. In de debuutwinkel in Californi\u00eb (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.retaildetail.be\/nl\/news\/food\/amazon-opent-eerste-fresh-supermarkt-meer-locaties-volgen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sinds augustus 2020<\/a>) kwamen tussen het tweede en het vierde kwartaal van vorig jaar zelfs bijna een kwart (24%) meer bezoekers over de vloer. Het nieuwe was er toen al wel af, dus laten de cijfers vooral zien hoe de supermarkten steeds beter ingebed geraken in hun gemeenschap. Dat blijkt uit een analyse van het Amerikaanse Placer.ai, een bureau voor passantentellingen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Whole Foods herpakt zich<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;Tot nu toe zien de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supermarketnews.com\/retail-financial\/amazon-fresh-whole-foods-traffic-trends-show-two-pronged-strategy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gegevens er veelbelovend uit<\/a>,&#8221; zegt Shira Petrack van Placer.ai aan Supermarket News. Hoewel er een zeker corona-effect kan zijn \u2013 mensen die zich minder verplaatsen of beperkingen van het aantal klanten elders \u2013 geeft het feit dat de winkelbezetting over de hele linie steeg volgens Petrack aan dat deze locaties in de loop van de tijd een grotere vraag genereren. \u201cEen positief teken voor elke retailer.&#8221; Mensen kwamen ook van dichterbij naar de winkels, wat er weer op duidt dat de supermarkten minder een curiosum worden en erin slagen meer lokale klanten aan te trekken.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ook Whole Foods lijkt uit zijn dip te komen. Anders dan de meeste foodretailers zag de retailer zijn verkopen niet stijgen tijdens de coronapandemie. Integendeel: begin\u00a02021 kelderde het aantal bezoekers aan de premiumketen, gespecialiseerd in biologische voeding. Dat is sindsdien wel aan het veranderen: waar de winkels in januari nog een vijfde minder bezoekers telden dan in 2019, was dat in december 2021 nog maar 5,2% minder. Inmiddels zijn er zelfs nog veertig nieuwe winkelopeningen aangekondigd.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Complementaire formules<\/h2>\n<p>Whole Foods en Amazon Fresh blijken immers complementair te zijn. Uit cross-shoppinggegevens concludeert Petrack dat Amazon Fresh-klanten meer bij discounters zoals <strong>Ralphs<\/strong> en <strong>Aldi<\/strong> winkelen, maar niet zozeer bij Whole Foods. De interne kannibalisatie neemt zelfs af: waar in juli 2021 nog 13% van de Amazon Fresh-klanten bij Whole Foods ging, was dat tegen december 10,3%. Amazon Fresh positioneert zich steeds sterker als een prijsvechter, terwijl Whole Foods als een premium-supermarktketen een heel andere consumentenbasis aanspreekt.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Petrack verwacht dan ook dat Amazon zijn positie in de supermarktbranche zal versterken dit jaar. Zo kondigde de omnichannelreus pas nog aan grotere, kassaloze <strong>Amazon Go<\/strong>-supermarkten te openen in de stadsranden.
