Coronasteun voor modesector koppelen aan duurzaamheid?

De modesector blijft sterk afhankelijk van synthetische stoffen, zoals polyester, maar die zijn erg vervuilend. Een nieuwe studie roept Europa op om in te grijpen en zelfs de coronasteun te koppelen aan klimaatdoelstellingen.

 

Fossiele brandstoffen in kleding

“Niet veel consumenten zijn zich ervan bewust dat fast-fashion fossiele mode is”, zegt Urska Trunk van de Changing Markets Foundation na een nieuw rapport, dat aantoont hoe het gebruik van synthetische vezels, met name polyester, in textiel de afgelopen 20 jaar is verdubbeld, en waarschijnlijk zal blijven toenemen tot bijna driekwart van de totale wereldwijde vezelproductie in 2030.

“De verslaving van modemerken aan goedkoop polyester en andere van olie afgeleide vezels komt op een moment dat de wereld afstapt van fossiele brandstoffen. Maar in plaats van af te stappen van synthetische vezels, die een ecologische ramp veroorzaken, willen de merken je laten denken dat ze dit onder controle hebben en dat ze steeds meer kleding kunnen blijven produceren”, klinkt het scherp.

 

Microvezels en CO2-uitstoot

Vandaag zou polyester al te vinden zijn in meer dan de helft van alle textiel. Terwijl de voetafdruk van de polyesterproductie in 2015 het equivalent was van 700 miljoen ton CO2, vergelijkbaar met de totale jaarlijkse uitstoot van Mexico of 180 elektriciteitscentrales op kolen, zal dat cijfer tegen 2030 naar verwachting bijna verdubbelen.

Bovendien leiden de synthetische stoffen ook tot microvezels in de natuur, die niet biologisch worden afgebroken. Tijdens het gebruik, het wassen en het weggooien geeft synthetische kleding immers minuscule vezels af die onzichtbaar zijn voor het oog. Bijgevolg worden ze volgens de studie vandaag overal aangetroffen; van de Arctische oceanen tot in 80% van het leidingwater.

 

Hogere normen opleggen

Initiatiefnemer Changing Markets Foundation dringt daarom bij de Europese Commissie aan op ingrijpende wetgevende maatregelen. De Commissie werkt momenteel immers aan een textielstrategie, die later dit jaar wordt verwacht. De NGO stelt voor om de consumptie van kleding terug te dringen, onder meer door de mode-industrie los te weken van fossiele brandstoffen, hogere kwaliteits- en econormen op te leggen en de textielindustrie ook verantwoordelijk te maken voor het einde van de productcyclus. 

Modebedrijven die in aanmerking willen komen voor Covid-steunmaatregelen zouden alleen gefinancierd mogen worden als de merken beloven duurzamer te worden en het geld niet wordt gebruikt om “het falende fast-fashionmodel overeind te houden”, bepleit Trunk nog.
